The Characters of Pyramus

Updated: Jan 2, 2022

Salem Gray [he/him] Phineas Phoenix [He/him]

On the left, Salem Ga-I mean Gray, a too-curious-for-his-own-good, Fifth-Ring mage with a distaste for cold academia but a mad love for knowledge. On the right, Phineas Phoenix, a fire mage that is just doing his own thing. They say he lives in a volcano. He loves rocks and Salem.

Salem is studying magic at the Pyramus College, endorsed by the first-ring green magic teacher, prof. Merrythought, who met him when Salem was 9 and had just made a tree spout in the main square of his village. He learns super fast and often forgets time exists. He is very curious about what his elders call "dark magic" and wants to understand it. This has gotten him in several unfruitful arguments with his teachers because people usually blame the dagger, not the hand, and think that anyone looking into that kind of magic is going to do terrible things. Aside from that, he is very kind and thoughtful, and people usually like him in spite of themselves. He used to love helping the lower rings with their studies, but that was before rumors began spreading about his own studies. He is just so tired.

But he was lucky enough to run into Phineas in the Pyramus Library, while he was donating some books about fire crystals and volcanic geomorphology written by his uncle, Rembrandt Phoenix, who was a famous geologist. Salem had heard of Phineas before but he was surprised by the warmth of his character and the calmness of his voice. They started speaking about the properties of the different minerals while walking through the gardens. Since then, they've met a couple more times at the college and a sole rare time that Salem accompanied one of his professors to o mage gathering. All those encounters became long afternoons talking and discussing magic and a very long evening cataloguing night flora in the forest.

Phineas usually keeps to himself, since his calm and slow personality tend to clash with the bustle of the college and the magic circles. But he has started going to the college more often in hopes of finding Salem around. Their paths keep meeting and they are always happy to see the other.

Anne Fulgurant [she/her]

Anne is a very talented Fouth-Ring galvanic witch. She works non-stop tutoring the First and Second rings and also as an assistant in the Pyramus Library. Her personality is like a storm: you better not try to stop her. She and Salem have been friends for a while and he loves her straight-forward and honest personality. They usually exchange new spells and she's alway laughing at Salem's glammourie.

Professor Anathema Merrythought [she/her]

Anathema Merrythought is a powerful green witch that lives in a little cottage in the forests near the Pyramus College... and in the students' nightmares. She teaches earth magic, body strengthening spells and hand-to-hand combat to the First and Second Rings and has a very strong, unmovable personality. She is actually very kind and caring, and she doesn't hide it at all; but she is too smart to be taken advantage of. She is Salem's sponsor and his favourite teacher, although he is kind of scared of her... too many falls from trees and too much tough love. She is very protective of Salem because she knows him since he was a kid without a place to go, back when Anathema used to answer to another name. Many things have changed since then, but sometimes she still sees Salem as a lost kid desperate for help.

Professor Hox [he/him]

Hox teaches Invocation, Empath magic and Astronomy, from the Third Circle and up. He is one of the most feared teachers, and the older students make sure the first-circlers know not to cross him.

He is actually a really pacient person, but he is also very strict and doesn't allow disrespect and reckless behaviour in his class. The fact that the subjects he teaches are very complex and quite dense doesn't help his reputation.

He is a very talented Empath, and due to his emotional sensitivity he had to lear to keep an stoic attitude. This has made him quite sarcastic and stern, but Salem has heard him laugh a couple of times when spring arrives and the students start getting a little bit too giddy. There was a rumour that he cries whenever too many of his students do bad on tests because the collective anxiety gets to him; no one says it, but that's another reason his students work so hard during finals.
